We were scheduled to complete the angle relationships unit this week. However, I have decided to move on to Unit 2 and revisit angle relationships later. Students need to continue to study the geometry/ angle relationships terms everyday. They will have an unannounced quiz over these terms weekly throughout the month of October. Knowing these terms are critical to their success in working with angle relationships.

Vocabulary quizzes from before the break were returned today for parent signature. Students need to review their work and develop a study plan to learn the terms. They should know what each means and being able to identify pictures of each.

This week in math, we will begin Unit 2, which includes the following topics:
 - Exponents

Current Unit: Unit 1a Geometric Transformations
Unit Standards:  MCC8.G1, MCC8.G2, MCC8.G3, MCC8.G4

Crosswalk COACH Connection: Lesson 24

Due to ITBS testing and the shortened classes, we did not move as quickly as I anticipated last week. As such, we will complete the first part of the Rigid Transformations mini unit this week. Students have completed the first part (a performance task) of the 2-part unit assessment on Friday and will take the second part, which is a traditional test in class on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, we will begin an exploration of non rigid transformations -- dilations. Students will understand that dilations stretch or shrink figures proportionately. Students will learn to determine if a figure has been dilated or distorted by analyzing the relationships between corresponding sides and angles. Since we did not have an opportunity to use rigid transformations to prove or disprove congruency last week, I will add that to this week's lesson plan.  In addition, students will explore congruency versus similarity and use rigid and non-rigid transformations to prove whether figures are congruent, similar, both or neither.

In order to be successful with this unit, it is imperative that students are well versed with the following unit terms.

  • transformation
  • pre-image
  • image

This week in math, we will continue to study the standards in Unit 1a: Rigid Transformations and Congruency.  Students will focus on rotations and reflections, particularly describing the effect that these transformations have on a figure.

Week at a Glance: August 5, 2013

Generally, I try to publish the "Week at a Glance" at the beginning of each week to let you know what we will study in math for the week.  Each Monday (or first school day of the week), students are instructed to copy down the weekly agenda into their notebooks. Please check your child's agenda on Monday evenings and review the weekly math game plan with them.

This week in math, we will begin the week with a Unit Pre-test on Monday. Following the brief pretest, students will create a picture by plotting ordered pairs on the coordinate plane. This task will reinforce some of the prerequisite skills for the first unit, including plotting and reading ordered pairs and working with a coordinate grid.

For the remainder of the week, we will work on Unit 1a: Geometric Transformations. The unit will be introduced with a hands exploration of rigid transformations: translation, rotation, reflection.

Thereafter, we will study each of the transformations in isolation. Later this week, we will begin a focus on translations. Students will perform and interpret translations. They will need to know how to read and write translations verbally as well in the general form (algebraically). They will also need to be able to identify translations from pictures as well as sets of ordered pairs.

Students will need to know the following terms:

  • Transformation
  • Translate
  • Rotate
  • Reflect
  • Clockwise
  • Counterclockwise
  • Original
  • Image
  • Vertical
  • Horizontal
***HOMEWORK:  Students will have math homework every night except Friday.

They may have a quiz on Friday depending on how far we get this week.

Week at a Glance: February 4, 2013

This week in math, we will continue with the function unit. We will review the quiz from last week and continue to review identifying functions from: ordered pairs, mapping diagrams, tables & graphs.  Students will also identify functions from verbal expressions and word problems.

Students will learn to write rules for relations (functions and non functions) and distinguishing between linear and non linear relationships. They will also apply function rules (given a function rule and a set of input values, students will find the corresponding output values).

Week at a Glance: January 28, 2013

This week in math, we will begin the functions unit. We will start the unit by unpacking the standards to ensure that students understand what they are expected to learn. Students will work on identifying functions from a variety of situations:

*set of ordered pairs
*mapping diagrams
*tables
*graphs

Students will have a quiz on Friday. The quiz will require them to use different methods to determine if relationships are functions. It is important that they can explain their reasoning. They need to be able to articulate how the input values determine whether or not the relation is a function.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Week at a Glance: January 21, 2012

This week in math, we will finish the Pythagorean Theorem unit. I decided to spend one more week on this unit to provide some additional practice for the students. The unit assessment will be on Friday, January 25. Students will be assessed on their understanding and ability to apply the Pythagorean Theorem. They should be able to do the following:

Demonstrate an understanding that the Pythagorean Theorem is a statement about the areas of squares off of the legs and hypotenuse of a right triangle.

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find a missing side length (leg or hypotenuse) of a right triangle.

Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the area of a square and its side length.
-- side = square root of area

Find the square root of perfect squares and estimate the square root of non perfect squares.

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances (or lengths) in a coordinate grid.

Use the Pythagorean Theorem (converse) to determine if a given set of side lengths could form a right triangle.

Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.

Distinguish between rational and irrational numbers.

The link below is to a website that has some helpful information about the Pythagorean Theorem.
