1) Help your child get and stay organized (even if this has to be a nightly event).
2) Enforce that your child maintains an agenda or assignment notebook in which they write down all assignments. *Agenda sheets are available in Mrs. Silas's room
3) Enforce that your child maintains a math notebook (per the syllabus) and have them show you their notes.
4) Develop homework/studying ritual: quiet space, regular time, and all materials readily available.
5) Have your child tell you about what they are learning and explain concepts to you.
6) Look over your child's homework to confirm that it is complete.
7) Visit teachers' websites weekly to find out what kids are studying.
8) Use the Internet to get help (Type any topic into an Internet search bar and you'll get thousands of hits).
9) Find ways to practice basic number sense in everyday life
- have your child estimate the total of the grocery bill
- determine the price of sale items by calculating percentages
- calculate time (how long until a specific show comes on TV)
- use newspaper ads to compare prices (is 20% off of $20 a better deal than a $5 coupon off of $25)
** These ten items are not just ways of helping your child with math, but in all academic areas.
